Want a general health check without going for one of our larger blood-test packages?
Our Basic Health Screen is a great starting point. From one blood sample, it looks at your full blood count, kidney function, liver health and cholesterol profile, as well as an important marker of inflammation.
It may be useful if you’ve been feeling tired, generally run down or simply want a baseline picture of your health.
What does the Basic Health Screen check?
🩸 Full Blood Count – your blood cells
Your Full Blood Count includes:
Haemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein) Red Blood Cell Count (red blood cells) HCT / Haematocrit (proportion of your blood made up of red cells) MCV (average red blood cell size) MCH (amount of haemoglobin within red blood cells) MCHC (concentration of haemoglobin within red blood cells) RDW (variation in red blood cell size) Platelets (blood-clotting cells) MPV (average platelet size) White Blood Cell Count (immune cells) Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils & Basophils (different types of white blood cells)
These measurements give a useful overview of your blood cells and can identify patterns that may warrant further investigation, including certain patterns associated with anaemia, infection or inflammation.
Your kidneys play an important role in filtering your blood and maintaining the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance. These markers provide useful information about kidney function and electrolyte levels.
🧪 Liver health & proteins
Your screen includes:
Total Protein (overall blood protein level) Albumin (major blood protein produced by the liver) Globulin (group of proteins involved in functions including immunity) Alkaline Phosphatase / ALP (enzyme associated with liver and bone) Total Bilirubin (breakdown product processed by the liver) ALT / GPT (liver enzyme) AST / GOT (liver and muscle-associated enzyme) Gamma GT / GGT (liver and bile-duct enzyme)
Together, these give a broader picture of liver function and blood proteins. Abnormal results don’t automatically mean that there is a liver problem, but they can identify patterns that may need further assessment.
❤️ Cholesterol & heart health
The Basic Screen doesn’t just give you one cholesterol number. It includes:
Total Cholesterol Triglycerides (blood fats) HDL Cholesterol (“good” cholesterol) LDL Cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) Total Cholesterol/HDL Ratio HDL % of Total Cholesterol
Looking at the different types of cholesterol provides much more useful information than total cholesterol alone and can form part of assessing your longer-term cardiovascular health.
CRP is a protein that can increase when there is inflammation within the body. It is not a test for one particular disease, but the result can provide another useful piece of information when considered alongside your symptoms and other blood results.
